Status Duration and Timing Reports: A Clearer View of Case Processing

Written by Saman Saberi | 07/10/2026, 07:00

Knowing how many cases were opened or closed tells you only part of the story.

A team may close dozens of cases in a month while still having recurring delays at one particular stage of the investigation. Another team may process cases quickly overall but regularly miss the deadlines defined for certain statuses.

Ethicontrol's Status Duration and Timing reports add the time dimension to case analytics.

They answer two complementary questions:

  • How long do cases spend moving through particular stages?
  • Are cases being handled within the expected deadlines?

Status Duration: understand where time is spent

The Status Duration Report lets you select a starting status and an ending status and analyse how long cases take to move between them.

Instead of looking only at the total time between registration and closure, teams can focus on a specific part of the workflow.

For example, you might analyse:

  • how long cases remain under initial review;
  • how quickly they move from investigation to decision;
  • whether remediation takes longer for particular types of cases.

The report provides four duration metrics:

Metric What it shows
Average duration Average time across the selected cases
Minimum duration Shortest recorded duration
Maximum duration Longest recorded duration
Median duration Middle value when cases are ordered by duration

Looking at these values together provides more context than relying on the average alone, particularly when a small number of unusually long cases affects the overall result.

Learn how to select workflow stages, compare average, minimum, maximum, and median duration, and break the results down by category, unit, channel, priority, or procedure.

Compare duration across different groups

Duration becomes more useful when you can see where the differences occur.

The report can break results down by dimensions such as:

  • Priority;
  • Category;
  • Organisational Unit;
  • Intake Channel;
  • Procedure.

This can reveal, for example, that cases from one channel consistently take longer than others or that a particular organisational unit has longer processing times.

The result is not automatically a performance judgement. A longer duration may reflect case complexity, additional approvals, or dependencies on other teams.

Timing Report: Are cases staying within deadlines?

The Timing Report looks at the same case-management process from another angle.

Instead of measuring how long a stage takes, it shows the share of cases that remain within their defined deadlines at different statuses.

This can help teams see where deadline performance may require closer attention.

For example, if one stage repeatedly shows a lower share of cases within deadline, the team can investigate whether the cause is:

  • workload;
  • unclear responsibilities;
  • dependencies on another department;
  • a recurring workflow bottleneck.

Filters can then narrow the analysis by attributes such as category, procedure, Case Manager, priority, organisational unit, or intake channel.

See how to review the share of cases within deadlines, apply filters, and identify stages where case processing may require additional attention.

A practical example

Suppose a compliance team notices that cases are regularly missing an internal deadline during investigation.

The Timing Report helps identify the status where deadline performance is weakest.

The team can then use Status Duration to examine how much time cases spend moving through that part of the workflow and compare the result across categories, units, or procedures.

Together, the reports move the discussion from:

“Cases are taking too long.”

to:

“This stage takes longer for these types of cases, and this is where the deadline issue appears.”

That gives teams a much more useful starting point for investigating the cause.

What this changes for compliance teams

Earlier visibility of bottlenecks

More context around processing time

Teams can identify stages where cases consistently take longer or fall outside expected deadlines.   Average, median, minimum, and maximum duration help distinguish typical case behaviour from individual outliers.

More targeted process reviews

Better monitoring of workflow changes

Breakdowns and filters help narrow a timing problem to particular categories, units, channels, procedures, or assigned users.   If a team changes responsibilities, resources, or processes, the same reports can help evaluate whether case-processing patterns improve over time.

Two reports, one view of case timing

Neither report should be treated as a standalone performance score.

A longer investigation is not necessarily inefficient, and meeting every deadline does not automatically mean an investigation was effective.

Used together, Status Duration and Timing Report provide a clearer picture of how case workflows actually perform: where time is being spent, where deadlines are being missed, and where deeper review may be useful.
